Super Ayr Odds On To Win The Biggest Ayrshire Derby in History!

calvin&moff
Never mind your Barca versus Real, forget about Man United & Liverpool and you can keep your so called biggest derby in Scotland between Old Firm foes Rangers & Celtic!
This one’s the only one that counts for real football fans throughout the country meaning it must be time for the biggest and best rivalry in world football to renew its dues with Ayr United and Kilmarnock meeting in the Communities Cup Semi-Final at the National Stadium in Glasgow at the end of January.
As any Ayr United supporter will tell you, this match is a formality for the Bodog sponsored side. With incidents such as the ‘Hand of God’ goal from Bryan Prunty and Andy Walkers cheeky chappy chipped penalty goal at Somerset Park back in the glorious 1990′s, it’s not a matter of who will win but what outrageous goal antic will win the day for the Honest Men.
Will it be the Moff’s on Fire dance, Wardlaw’s moonwalk, Trouten’s Tango or Robertson’s Robot, which will light up the Somerset Road fans?

Mario Balotelli verdict and four-match ban lack stamp of fairness

Some players are more tiresome than others. There is Joey Barton with his bitter tweets and Andrey Arshavin, Arsenal's reluctant Russian, who after coming off the bench against Manchester United last Sunday gave the impression that if his shorts had pockets his hands would rarely have left them.

Ally McCoist dismisses stories he could walk away from Rangers

Ally McCoist has moved to dismiss suggestions he could walk away from Rangers amid frustrations at financial restraints. Rumours swept Glasgow in midweek that McCoist could quit as the Rangers manager with the club toiling to find wages even to fund free transfer signings. The stories were apparently linked to a visit by the ex-chairman Sir David Murray to Rangers' training ground.

The Secret Footballer: You do get a buzz when beer bottles hit the bus

This weekend sees the latest instalment of the bitter rivalry that is Liverpool and Manchester United. On the off-chance that tensions between the two clubs were not already at an all-time high on the back of United's record 19th league title last season, the flashpoint provided at Anfield three months ago by Luis Suárez and Patrice Evra will ensure a particularly explosive atmosphere this time round.

Galveston Pirates Announce San Antonio Scorpions Pre Season Friendly

It's a week that seems to just be getting better and better for the Pirates, today we can joyously announce that after some frantic discussions, a pre NPSL season friendly match has been arranged with South Texas NASL side San Antonio Scorpions.

by Marc Roseblade
After yesterday's announcement of our partnership with sporting kit supplier Admiral, this tie against the Scorpions shows the advancements our club has made in recent times and proves that the Pirates are building a reputation in the Texas soccer fraternity that can only grow with matches such as this one.

As the Pirates prepare for the NPSL season to start in May, this will be the biggest match to date for the players and club and will surely be the sternest test they will be likely to face this year.

The Scorpions themselves are preparing for the start of their inaugural NASL season after only forming in 2010 and have big plans for the future with the recent announcement of a 6'100 seater stadium hopefully being completed by 2013 at the STAR soccer complex.

Their own preseason will likely to be littered with matches against MLS sides to make sure they are fit and ready for their opening match against away to Atlanta Silverbacks on April 7 and this match against the Pirates will also be a test for them in preparation for that first all important competitive match for the club.

Galveston Pirate coach Brendan Keyes said:"This is great news for us;This week just keeps getting better and better for the club, maybe I should buy a lottery ticket for the weekend!"
"It shows our ambition that we want to play against the best the state has to offer, we don't want to rest on our laurels and stay still. We want to grow and build a soccer community and franchise that the whole area can get behind and be proud of."

Speaking with a giddiness normally seen in 7 year olds when talking about Santa Claus, he continued:"We are preparing for the NPSL, we have Texas State cup matches to play, we will be playing in the US Open Cup, we just qualified for the last 16 in the Houston Memorial Cup, we have a great chance of promotion to the Premier League in the HFA league we currently participate in, we signed a 5 year deal with soccer apparel supplier Admiral yesterday and now this, it's brilliant, that's why I love this game and why I do it."

"The talks went fast and before I knew it, San Antonio agreed to play us." said the coach.
"It's been a furious day trying to arrange the details and I am over the moon that the Scorpions have been kind enough to fit us into their busy schedule of pre season matches." he said.

The match is to be played at the STAR soccer complex in San Antonio on  Friday March 9th with a 8pm kick off.

"We understand that it's quite a journey for our supporters to travel and if any come along to help support us, it would be a great boost for us, but the fact we have the tie at all is boost enough for all involved at the club." Keyes said.
"The players are buzzing for this game now and if playing for a place in the NPSL team wasn't enough incentive to play well week in week out, this match will add an extra sting in their tail to show their worth."

Galveston Pirates Trounce Houston to Progress to Last 16 of Cup (video highlights)

Jonathan Yanez
The Memorial Cup match on Saturday 21 gave the Pirate players and staff the opportunity to show how far they have progressed this season as they took to the field against CD Houston who belong to the HFA Premier League stable of sides.

Their opponents may currently sit bottom of the top league but despite this, Coach Brendan Keyes was never going to take that position as a gauge for the standard of quality his opponents have. During the  preparations for this match, the Irishman was never going to underestimate the Houston side and worked on preparing his players mentally as well as physically.

The match started quickly with CD Houston coming straight out the blocks playing some good football and proving their league position is a false one but it was the Pirates who opened the scoring after eight minutes when Fabrice Bongo crossed a ball in for Jonathan Yanez who took the opportunity with a sweet volley from 18 yards out that saw the ball nestle nicely low in the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

The Pirates almost doubled their lead only two minutes later only for the post to save Houston and keep the result at only 1-0 thus far.

The game swung back and forth and although the Pirates were having the better of the chances, they failed to build on their lead and almost paid the penalty in more ways than one when they relinquished a spot kick which was subsequently blasted over much to the relief of the Galveston coach.

Coach Keyes said of his half time team talk," I told the guys that we were in complete control but needed to finish better, not to give Houston so much time on the ball and to spread the ball out to the wings a bit more."

The players seemed to take the coaches words on board and before long the Pirates made it 2-0 when Michael Hutson scored from 10 yards out after he latched onto the end of a beautiful 6-pass build up before firing home.

Fabrice Bongo
This goal seemed to give the players a lift and from that point they were in control of the game and never looked in danger of losing.

The third goal was added when Fabrice Bongo beautifully chipped the goalkeeper from 30 yards out and although Houston still never gave up, they were being totally out classed by the superior Galveston team who were now playing with swagger and style.

Former Cruz Azul player Taylor Lubianski scored the teams fourth with some clever play that saw him side step two defenders and bewilder the keeper into committing himself before chipping home over the 6 foot 6 goalie to put the game out of site.

Although on easy street at this point, the Pirates looked like they wanted more and without reply added another two more goals from Jose Reyna, the second of which came from the penalty spot after Reyna's original shot was handled on the line by a Houston defender to stop a goal but the attacker took the spot kick himself with the ball bulging the net to end the scoring 6-0 for the Pirate team.

After the game Coach Keyes said:"It was a fantastic performance today as CD Houston play some good football and it was nice to win and win big against a premier league team and fly the flag for the Championship sides. On this performance and on our current form, I believe we will be playing in the premier league next season but we need to keep it going and don't let up."

"When the draw was made I was happy with our opponents. I want to play the best teams available so we can improve as a team and a club; You don't get better playing poor teams." said Keyes.

"The cup run is nice but our goal is to gain promotion to the next level through this league.  I believe HFA is the very best league in Texas with some great teams and players. It's run very professionally run and we enjoy playing in it."

RJ McNair
Carrying on he said "I was happy to get a Premiership team in the cup because I know we could compete and perhaps win but I didn't expect to win 6-0. It was a marvellous performance from everyone on the team and the guys deserve all the credit for what I would class as the best performance from a Pirate team ever."

When asked who he thought the man of the match was he replied:"That's a hard one to answer as the whole team played great but when having to pick one player, I think Jonathan Yanez deserves the plaudits for MVP for his superb goal and two assists. He is pure class and good enough to play at a higher level, maybe MLS, definetly NASL when he gets 100% back fit. RJ was also magnificent tonight and a great leader once again, the guys really respond to him as captain of the team."

Monday brings the draw for the next round of the cup and with only 16 remaining, chances of silverware are getting more and more realistic for the NPSL bound team.

Ayrshire Derby Creates a Buzz in Queretaro, Mexico

This weekend’s Ayrshire derby cup semifinal match in Scotland is causing huge excitement and anticipation as the two Ayrshire rivals square off for the biggest derby in their history. However it's in another part of the world that we take this story as our friends in Queretaro, Mexico start preparing for the Ayr United v Kilmarnock derby to kick off.

By John Linden

To provide an explanation of why that is I’ll need to turn the clock back to 1986 when Scotland played West Germany in the Corregidora stadium in Queretaro. This was the game where Gordon Strachan scored a screamer, tried to get over the advertising hoardings to celebrate but found that his legs were too wee and he was unable to jump over them!

Among the Tartan Army was a fellow called Kenny Macpherson from the town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, Kenny enjoyed his time in Queretaro so much that he returned in 1987 and is his still here to this day.

In 2007 my wife and I came to live in her home city of Queretaro with our son John. Not long after our arrival I was told that there was a fellow Scotsman here and I sought him out. Kenny and I became good friends, being from the same county in Scotland and sharing the same passion for the beautiful game. In fact, the only times we met during my first couple of years in Queretaro was at the stadium watching our adopted local team, the Gallos Blancos when they played in the lower Primera A league.

We attracted a few strange looks as we shouted during the game in our broad Ayrshire accents and on one occasion we were approached by an American fan who told us that although the game hadn’t been great, we had provided him with some great entertainment.

The Scotland national team is also an occasion for us to get together and more than once we’ve scoured the internet for a reliable stream to watch the game.

Kenny is now the owner of Kenny’s Vaqueros, the only Scottish cowboy karaoke bar in Mexico. When the Gallos Blancos are playing away some friends of mine and fellow Gallos fans go to Kenny’s and enjoy a cold beer or two while we take in the game on the bar’s giant screens.

After enjoying many a fine moment together watching the game we find ourselves supporting opposing teams as our respective towns fight it out in this weekends semifinal at Hampden Park in Glasgowl. We will of course be searching for an online link to the game and we’ll both follow with great interest.

When asking Kenny his views on the game his response was as follows – ‘ Ayr United have done well at Somerset Park and their away game at St. Mirren, both of which are wee tight parks. The Hampden pitch is a lot bigger and Ayr will struggle, therefore I expect Killie to win the game.’

As I am from the other side of this sporting divide I back the Honest Men from Ayr to win the game, given that they have beaten several premier league teams in their fine cup runs this season.

Whatever the outcome, there will be a couple of fitba’ daft Scotsmen enjoying the occasion from the other side of the world.

Follow details of the match here on Twitter   from 7am Queretaro time.
